Over 140 alumni from across the region gathered in the Philippines for the 2nd Regional GEDSI Alumni Leadership Summit. With the theme “GEDSI-liency: A Collaborative Journey towards Inclusive Climate Action,” the event kicked off with inspiring talks from Australia Awards alumni who are GEDSI champions in their countries followed by learning trips to alumni-led institutions and programs in Manila.


The alumni discussed good practices of inclusive actions and community resilience in different contexts and developed solutions that are relevant for their own communities and countries.

Placemaking is a widespread practice in Australia that focuses on building and improving the quality of public spaces, connecting communities, and improving the life of the people who use these spaces. Pioneering the first financial technology (FinTech) course in the University of the Philippines

Empowered by his Master of Commerce in Enterprise Systems and Business Design from University of New South Wales, Ramon Carlo Pio Roda designed the first Financial Technology (FinTech) course at the University of the Philippines Diliman’s Virata School of Business. Pio developed the course to prepare Filipino students for the global market and empower them to thrive in the evolving financial landscape. “The financial technology course was designed to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in a highly competitive global job market,” he said.

In 2025, Pio was awarded Young Achiever at the Australia Alumni Excellence Awards for his pioneering initiative. Designing the FinTech course was his re-entry action plan (REAP) for Australia Awards Scholarships.
