Davao City, Philippines – Over 40 Filipino alumni, stakeholders, including representatives of eight indigenous communities in Mindanao, and partners from the Department of Trade and Industry and the Philippine Eagle Foundation, recently gathered in Davao City to discuss and learn ways to support indigenous peoples (IP) communities across the Philippines. The knowledge-sharing session dubbed, Development amidst Diversity: Supporting Indigenous Communities through the Alumni Grants Scheme, were led by alumni speakers who have been making a difference in various indigenous communities through the support of the Australia Alumni Grants Scheme (AGS).

AGS provides financial support to alumni-led projects that raise awareness on social issues; implement innovative ideas; promote gender equality, disability, and social inclusion; and contribute to the sustainable development goals while showcasing Australia’s excellence as provider of quality education and training.

AGS grantees Atty Raymond Marvic Baguilat, Leny Castillo, Dr Jayson Ibanez and Dr Milton Medina shared meaningful stories and insights on their experience in supporting IP communities.

Atty Baguilat shared insights about protecting and preserving the cultural skills and knowledge of indigenous peoples in Kiangan, Ifugao. Meanwhile, Leny Castillo shared how she helped the Matigsalug community hone their craft and create livelihood opportunities while saving the environment.

Dr Ibanez shared stories of how he helped indigenous communities in Mt Apo and Pantaron Key Biodiversity Areas take an active part in protecting the area’s natural resources. This complemented Dr Medina’s work to train Manobo-Clata indigenous women from Mt. Talomo in conserving endemic plant species.

Chairperson Allen Capuyan of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples shared insights on inclusive development for indigenous cultural communities and indigenous peoples and the role of the Philippine government.

The session was capped by a workshop where alumni shared insights, questions, and ideas on how they can further support indigenous communities, particularly around biodiversity and environmental protection, economic empowerment, delivery of basic services, and protection of cultural integrity.

Applications for the Alumni Grants Scheme are accepted year-round. Visit https://www.australiaawardsphilippines.org/alumni/ags2023 for more information.
