Australia honours achievements and contributions of Australia Awards scholars in the Philippines
Manila, Philippines - Over 200 Filipino alumni of the prestigious Australia Awards Scholarships gathered for a special recognition ceremony led by Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Steven J Robinson AO, key Philippine government officials, and representatives from Australian universities.
Australia Awards Scholarships are offered by the Australian Government to the next generation of global leaders from developing countries to enable them to undertake study and professional development in Australia.
“We take pride that Australia Awards scholars from the Philippines have put their education to good use, many have become leaders and change-makers in government and public service, in business and industry and in their communities,” said Ambassador Robinson.
Over 1,500 Filipinos have been awarded with Australia Awards Scholarships since 2004 and they have since been contributing towards the development, prosperity, and resilience of the Philippines. The Australian and Philippine governments work together to determine the priority fields of study, ensuring that the scholarship is responsive to the development needs of the Philippines.
Undersecretary Ireneo Vizmonte of the Department of Trade and Industry underscored the value of Australia Awards in building the capacity and competencies of Philippine government officials.
“The Australian Government’s transformational Australia Awards Scholarships is targeted and strategic and supports the Philippines build human capital. It capacitates and trains current and emerging leaders and influencers. With our countries’ mutual priorities on education and knowledge transfer, especially agility and resilience amidst the COVID-19 situation, I believe we are on the right track in pursuing this program to move forward towards the vision of progress and inclusive development,” he said.
Australia Awards alumni are leaders, influencers and changemakers across Philippine society. Speaking on behalf of the Australia Awards alumni, Undersecretary Janet Abuel of the Department of Budget and Management, who completed her Master of Laws at the University of Sydney, recognised the privilege and responsibility of being an Australia Awards scholar and alumna in the Philippines.
"With the additional credentials derived from an exceptional Australian education, more doors opened - better assignments, more challenging work, promotions, new and better employment or engagements. However, together with that is the challenge to continue to live up to our roles as iskolar para sa bayan (scholars for the country) - to do our best in our respective fields of work and contribute to national development," said Undersecretary Abuel.
In his message to the scholars, Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua of the National Economic and Development Authority emphasised the impact of Australia Awards alumni to Philippine development. “Through the years, Australia Awards has helped shape Filipino scholars into leaders who contribute to the country’s development,” he said. Since the 1950s, education has played an important part in the close people-to-people links between the Philippines and Australia.
